Treat Your Trading Like A Business Not a Hobby

Treating your trading like a business is a major step in the direction of becoming a professional trader. Just seeing your trading as a business creates a different mindset and approach to your trading from a hobby to a vocation. This different approach leads to a lot more time being spent to get a robust plan in place to give you a much greater chance of succeeding. It is funny and in other ways a bit sad that most people spend more time planning their holidays than they do in planning their financial future. So what does all this mean and what needs to be done?

Start with a plan

Some of the things you will need to consider in developing your plan are:

* What do you want to do?
* When do you want to do it?
* How are you going to do it?
* Where is it going to happen?
* Why do you want to do it?
* What are your strengths?
* What are your weaknesses?

What do you want to do?

What do you want to achieve through your trading? Is your intention to supplement your income from your employment or some other source or do you want to become a full time trader. Do you have a goal of earning a certain amount of income from trading.

When do you want to do it?

When do you want to achieve you goal by? Pretty simple there is not much more to it than that.

How are you going to do it?

This is the part that your trading plan plays. You will need to have a proven profitable trading plan that you know will achieve your goals. It will also include your whole financial management plan.

Where is it going to happen?

This is probably another simple one with the answer either at your home at a dedicated office or all around the world.

Who will be involved?

Will it just be you or will your spouse or a business partner be involved? You will need to consider advisors who you may surround your self with in the areas of accounting, legal and financial planning. What type of broker you will use will also need to worked out depending on your style of trading.

Why do you want to do it?

This may be one of the harder questions to answer but probably the most important one. This comes more from the heart than the head. Having an emotional attachment will help as a driving force to keep you moving ahead when things seem to be going against you. It may be just the sense of achievement or that amazing feeling of being financially free.

What are your strengths?

Do a bit of self assessment as to determine what your strengths are and what skills and resources you have to be able to call on. Consider your successes in life and what you do well.

What are your weaknesses?

More self assessment but this one may not be as enjoyable but it is still a necessary task. By identifying your weaknesses you can help remove your blind spots so that you minimise problems down the track. Through assessing your weaknesses you can then take action to rectify them through training involving someone with strengths you need or developing that qualities within yourself.

Other important elements

Some other aspects of a business which you will need to consider is what structure you will use to carry out your trading activities. Will you trade as an individual or as a company or even using more complex trust structures.

As with any good business you will need some sort of feedback system in place so that you know that you are on track and meeting your targets. In conjunction with that feedback system will be incorporated a continuous improvement process so that there is ongoing refinement of your operations.

I have only briefly touched on just some of the aspects of treating your trading like a business but you can see that it will create a whole new approach to your trading. You will no longer just be bobbing around in the sea of the markets at the mercy of current conditions you will now have your course mapped out coordinates set and steaming towards your destination.
